Around half a century ago, Tom Ritchey and his mentor Jobst Brandt, along with a group of like-minded friends, spent countless adventurous hours riding the remote trails, rough gravel roads, and broken tarmac weaving through the mountains near Butano State Park in northern California. To this day, Tom still rides those same trails and roads, and they served as the inspiration for the Butano handlebar.
This unique handlebar has gained popularity among gravel enthusiasts and road cyclists since its recent introduction. Its wide drop flare provides increased control and confidence for adventurous riders compared to traditional drop bars, while the shallow drop and short reach offer comfort during long rides on challenging terrain.
In its 2021 update, the new Butano improves upon its original comfort by adding features like internal cable routing and an ergonomic, aerodynamic top section for better hand support. The drop flare on the updated Butano has also been expanded to a generous 18-degree angle for added comfort and control.
